"Colorado County was originally part of Stephen F. Austin's first colony, and was known as the Municipality of Colorado under the rule of the Mexican government.  In 1837 it was organized as one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas.  In view of its significant role in Texas history, it is surprising that until now no one has ever taken the time and the trouble to write a comprehensive history of the county.  For this reason, in 1981 the Colorado County Historical Commission decided to make a compilation of the county's early history its primary objective.     Colorado County Chronicles    is the result of  this five year project.  The long-awaited work covers the early history  of the county and includes chapters on the German, Czech, and Black influences, school  histories, church histories, and extensive appendixes with early census records, marriage records, lists of county officials, and other  important data.   The handsomely bound two volume set contains almost 1,000 pages and over 300 photographs.  Many primary sources, including  county records, newspapers, and personal memoirs were  used by the researchers.  The result is an important  tool for historians and genealogists, as well as a  very readable and highly entertaining story."

If you wish to purchase a copy/copies of the two volumes please contact the County Judge’s Office at 979/732-2604, 400 Spring Street, Rm. 113,    (P. O. Box 236) Columbus, Texas 78934.
